Rotator cuff disease is a common dilemma people face today. More than half of adults over the age of 60 endure some degree of rotator cuff tear explaining why it is the most common cause of shoulder pain among people of the same age.
The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint and is responsible for moving the arm. Where many factors contribute to rotator cuff tears, including genetics, trauma, and injury, the most common cause is called degenerative tendinosis. As we age, our tendons typically lose biomedical properties, vascularity and tensile strength that naturally allow for tissue healing. Not only does this tendon break down often contribute to a patient’s need for surgical intervention, but it can propose challenges for both the surgeon performing a rotator cuff repair as well as the patient healing from the surgery.

Some of Dr. Trenhaile’s patients have been finding success in his treating their rotator cuff tears with an innovative technology known as the Rotation Medical Rotator Cuff System. OrthoIllinois is the first facility in Northern Illinois to offer this new state-of- the-art approach to patients suffering from rotator cuff injuries and pain. “We’re using a collagen based, bioinductive implant delivered arthroscopically right over the location of the rotator cuff injury” explains Dr. Trenhaile. Clinical studies have shown that these slowly dissolving implants help to heal tendons by inducing the growth of new similar tissue, resulting in both thicker tendons and replacement of tissue defects. Depending on the degree of rotator cuff disease, a patient who receives this bioinductive implant can potentially see shorter rehabilitation, faster recovery, increased potential to prevent or slow disease progression, and decreased risk of developing additional degenerative tears.
Clinical studies are being conducted by a select group of surgeons in the U.S. to report on the success of this innovative solution.
